Ik heb dit boek als luisterboek geluisterd toen ik naar Nice ging, omdat het verhaal zich hier afspeelde. Emma Donoghue is een naam die ik vaak voorbij zie komen, maar waar ik nog niet veel van heb gelezen.

Ik vond het een goed boek. Het is een origineel verhaal over Noah, een 79 jarige man die op het punt staat op vakantie te gaan naar Nice, de stad waar hij geboren is en de eerste jaren van zijn leven heeft gewoond voordat hij naar New York verhuisde. Hij heeft een doos met oude foto’s gevonden die mogelijk van zijn moeder waren, waar mensen en locaties op staan die hij niet herkent. Hij is vastbesloten dit mysterie op te lossen. Maar dan gaat de telefoon. Zijn 11jarig achter(achterachterachter?)neefje heeft een nieuwe verzorger nodig, en hij is de enige persoon die hem op zich kan nemen.

Na veel gemopper, zo geschiedde, en Noah en Michael reizen samen naar Nice.

Er zit erg veel in dit boek, het is historische fictie en je leert veel over de oorlog in Nice en de stad zelf, maar ook gaat het boek over familiebanden en onverwachte vriendschappen. Tegelijkertijd is het ook een mysterie. Er zit veel in, maar alles komt goed samen en niks is gehaast of geforceerd. Ik vond het een erg mooi boek.

Het enige wat wel erg storend was, was het luisterboek. Noah is dus eigenlijk Frans, maar de voorlezer is dat overduidelijk niet. Er zitten best wat Franse woorden en zinnen in het boek en de voorlezer spreekt alles verkeerd uit, terwijl het personage Noah juist vaak aan de kleine Michael uitlegt hoe je iets uitspreekt. Het is echt heel storend en dat zorgde er vaak voor dat ik uit het verhaal raakte.

Het boek zelf is erg goed en ik heb ervan genoten, maar het luisterboek is echt flut.
