The hidden people lived inside hillocks, cliffs or boulders, very close to the abodes of the humans. Their homes were furnished with fine, sumptuous objects. Their clothes were luxurious, their adornments beautiful. Their livestock was better and fatter, their sheep yielded more wool than regular sheep, their crops were more bounteous. They even had supernatural powers: they could make themselves visible or invisible at will, and they could see the future. To the Icelanders, stories of elves and hidden people are an integral part of the cultural and psychological fabric of their nation. They are a part of their identity, a reflection of the struggles, hopes, resilience and endurance of their people. All this and more is the subject of this book. 

Recensie:
Zoals altijd wanneer ik op vakantie ga, ging ik op zoek naar boeken over de locatie waar ik heen ging. Vorig jaar zouden we naar IJsland gaan en dus ging ik op zoek naar IJslandse verhalen. Een verhaal over de hidden people leek me superleuk, en dit boek klonk goed, dus bestelde ik het.

Maar het boek had een hele andere insteek dan ik dacht. Want ik dacht, leuk, wat meer te weten komen over de folklore van IJsland, maar de auteur had een andere insteek met het boek. Ze was zó negatief en pessimistisch over IJsland en de folklore terwijl ze (aan haar achternaam te zien) wel zelf uit de regio komt. De verhalen zelf leken haar en haar heritage te beledigen en ze schreef het boek niet als een liefhebber van folklore, maar eerder als een ‘kijk hoe stom onze hidden people zijn’.

Daar had ik op zich nog wel mee kunnen dealen als de verhalen wel goed geschreven waren. Maar ook dat was niet het geval. De verhalen hadden te weinig plotelementen om een verhaal genoemd te worden. Het kwam op mij meer over als een dronken oom die op een verjaardag een verhaal probeert te vertellen, waarna de rest van de familie in stilte valt zo van ‘okeee, moving on’.

Ik heb het geprobeerd, maar de verhalen waren zo slecht dat het eerder anekdotes waren dan verhalen, dat ik het toch opgegeven heb.
