Ik ben best wel fan van Atwood. Eerder las ik The handmaid’s tale (klik) en The heart goes least (klik) en die waren ontzettend sterk. Atwood is een kei in het neerzetten van een dystopische wereld waar je rillingen van krijgt. Een tijdje terug kwamen we dit boekje van haar tegen bij boekenfestijn, een bundel met korte verhalen. Over het algemeen hou ik meer van boeken dan van korte verhalen, maar ik wilde zien of Atwood hier ook zo goed in is. En dat is ze zeker.

De verhalen zijn kort, twee à drie pagina’s per verhaal, maar ook hierin weet ze keer op keer een herkenbaar of juist beklemmend gevoel op te roepen. In weinig woorden weet ze de lezer te raken, maar vooral ook ervoor te zorgen dat de lezer nadenkt over wat hij net gelezen heeft, net als in haar boeken.

Dit zijn geen simpele verhaaltjes voor het slapengaan, maar kleine, literaire kunstwerkjes die je bijblijven.
