Dit is een boek dat ik bij het boekenfestijn heb gekocht. Ik kwam het tegen en toen had ik al zoveel boeken dat ik besloot het te laten liggen, maar de keer daarop kwam ik het wéér tegen. Ik vond de cover zo mooi en ik wist niet goed wat ik van de flaptekst moest maken, maar ik besloot het er maar op te wagen.

Ik vond het verhaal wel leuk en ook de setting sprak me wel aan. Maria, de mechanical girl uit de titel, was een erg tof en origineel personage. Daarnaast las het boek erg vlot, althans in het begin.

Hoe verder het verhaal vordert, hoe meer dingen er gebeuren die ik niet tof vond. Er waren vreemde plotwendingen die overdreven en ongeloofwaardig overkwamen waardoor het hele verhaal afgezwakt werd. Dat gold ook voor de personages, er waren voor mijn gevoel lukraak wat mensen uit de geschiedenis geplukt voor dit verhaal, terwijl ze niet in de setting pasten of thuis hoorden. Het hele verhaal is ongeloofwaardig en overdreven.

Daarbij komt nog dat het hoofdverhaal eigenlijk al voorbij is, ergens op de helft van het boek. Maar dan gaat het nog verder, terwijl er eigenlijk niets meer gebeurd.

Nee, ik vond dit boek geen succes. De cover was mooi, en het begin was okay, maar het werd langzaamaan allemaal steeds minder.
