I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

Deze serie las ik vroeger. Ik vond het echt fantastisch en ik besloot hem weer eens te herlezen. Ik heb alleen deel 1 dus ik kan nog niet echter verder lezen, maar ik weet inmiddels weer hoe de serie verder gaat dankzij Netflix. Die serie is trouwens echt leuk, als je hem nog niet gezien hebt, doen! (Zeker omdat Neil Patrick Harris erin speelt en hij is best wel fantastisch – also known as Barney)

Ik vind dit verhaal nog steeds heel leuk. Het leest vlot en alles gaat mis. Het is een boek waarbij een keer niet alles goed komt en dat is tof. Ook is de verteller aanwezig en geeft hij de hele tijd commentaar. Dat gebeurt niet zo vaak en dat is leuk gedaan. Het nadeel is daarin alleen wel dat het een kinderboek is en dat hij dingen gaat uitleggen die ik al lang weet. Desalniettemin vond ik het een leuke verandering op wat ik normaal lees.

Daarnaast vind ik het heel tof dat de kinderen Baudelaire heten en dat de man van de bank Mr. Poe heet.

Het is dus een leuk klein boekje, een eerste deel, waar ik als kind van heb genoten en nu nog steeds erg leuk vind!
